Wiley Top Cited Article Award

We are proud to share that the paper “Blended learning in the engineering field: A systematic literature review”, co-authored by Dario Antonelli, has been recognized by Wiley as a Top Cited Article 2025 in the journal Computer Applications in Engineering Education.

The article, published in 2024, is the result of an international collaboration among R. Sala, A. Maffei, F. Pirola, F. Enoksson, S. Ljubić, A. Skoki, J. P. Zammit, A. Bonello, P. Podržaj, T. Žužek, P. C. Priarone, D. Antonelli, and G. Pezzotta. The recognition highlights the scientific impact and visibility achieved by the study within the research community.

The paper presents a systematic literature review on blended learning in engineering education, examining how higher education institutions have implemented combinations of face-to-face and digital learning activities. The study also investigates how these approaches relate to different learning objectives, interpreted through Bloom’s Taxonomy, and explores the role played by the COVID-19 pandemic in accelerating the adoption of blended learning models.

Among its main contributions, the review shows that interest in blended learning in engineering has grown steadily over time, with particular attention to approaches that combine in-person and remote activities. The study also highlights that most published experiences focus on the lower and intermediate levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy, while higher-order learning objectives such as evaluation and creation remain less explored. In addition, the paper provides practical recommendations for educators interested in designing blended learning experiences in engineering courses.

This award represents an important acknowledgment of the relevance of research carried out in the field of engineering education, confirming the value of contributions that connect pedagogy, digitalization, and innovation in higher education.
